Parc National Des Volcans is the definitive location to track the rare and captivating mountain gorilla (Gorilla gorilla beringei) in Africa. This area straddles the border with Congo and Uganda. There is a chain of no less than seven volcanoes, the highest, Karisimbi is more than 4500m. The bamboo and rainforest covered slopes of the Volcanoes are some of the last remaining habitats of the mountain gorillas, which was studied in great depth by George Schaller and, more recently, by Dian Fossey who spent the best part of her 13 years residing at a remote camp high up on the slopes of Bisoke with an aim of studying gorillas and habituate them to human contact. She would probably still be there now had she not been murdered in December 1985. Her years with gorillas can be traced Silverback-gorillain the book Gorillas in the Mist.

There are 4 habituated groups of gorillas in Parc National Des Volcans, including the Susa Group which has 35 members. this group is the largest but hardest to access. Sabinyo group has 13 members, Amahura with 16 and Group 13 with just six.
