Mount Nyiragongo Eruption in 2021

2021 Mount Nyiragongo Eruption

Mount Nyiragongo located in Virunga National Park in Eastern Congo has erupted after 19 years since the last eruption in 2002. The 2021 eruption took place on 22nd May 2021 when the sky turned fiery red sending lava to the nearby Goma city, the home to over 1 million people. Residents in Goma were seen fleeing to the nearby countries especially Rwanda. Fortunately, by Sunday 23rd 2021, the lava had stopped a few meters from Goma sparing the city and all business in the city Centre. Similarly, the nearby Goma airport was not destroyed by the Lava flow. Whereas there are some destructions by the lava flow, the people of Congo were very lucky this time that the eruption was brief and the Lava flow did not spread all over the place. According to Dario Tedesco, a volcanologist in Goma, its only the lava within the crater that came out, its believed that no additional lava from below came out. The first eruption of Nyiragongo Volcano was in 1882 and its believed to have erupted 32 times since the first eruption.
